Imagery that belittles, mocks, and debases women is commonplace in the United States. This imagery, found in popular culture and material culture, is often linked to the gender roles assigned to girls and women. For example, women who are assertive-a trait traditionally recommended for men-are often portrayed as less attractive and mean-spirited. In some instances, these women have their sexual orientation questioned; and, in some cases, they are portrayed as men. Just as racial and ethnic minorities are negatively caricatured as one-dimensional beings, women are sometimes caricatured, for example, as nags, gold diggers, dunces, and Jezebels.
The goal of the Jim Crow Museum is to tell the stories of injustice towards all groups. More information and images will be coming soon.
